NAME, - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
matsuoka, yumeko - yumeko - dream child - is her first name. had she been male, it would have been chiharu - one thousand springs - and ichigo - strawberry - would have been her name had she been born two months later, as she was supposed to have been, during the season when the strawberries would start ripening. one day later and she would have been haruko - spring child. but, alas, she was born female in the late-winter/early-spring, and so 'yumeko' became the name she would spend the rest of her life with, being born at an equinox at dusk when the twilight had a sort of surreal dream-like quality to it. (and, although she doesn't mind the name too much, she often - too often - finds herself wishing that she had been born chiharu - as a boy - instead.)
'yumeko' is not, however, a name with hundreds of variations to shorten to pet names, and so the only one common enough to note is 'yume-chan.' although, if it were up to her, everyone would address her as 'yumeko' without fail, because she thinks that 'yume-chan' sounds childish, and she would wish for anything but to seem like a child. but most see her as a child, and thus, 'yume-chan' it is. other common nicknames include 'dimples' and 'pipsqueak.' let's just leave it at that yumeko doesn't really like any of her nicknames.
'matsuoka,' her last name, has been in her family for nearly four centuries, and roughly translates to 'hill covered in pines.' the reason for this name is obvious: her family simply owned - and still does own - a dojo and estate on a hill covered with pine trees. yumeko lives there during the summers still with her family, the dojo still standing and still in use, and it is one of the things the matsuokas pride themselves in.
AGE, - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
fourteen, born on march 21st.
GENDER, - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
yume-chan is clearly female, and usually dresses like she is as well, but if she is wearing particularly baggy sweats or something similar she can be mistaken for a young boy because of her short hair and small stature. She is, though, in reality one hundred percent female.
SEXUALITY, - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
heterosexual. yumeko's still young and although she sometimes might fantasize about a prince coming to sweep her off her feet, she's had no experience when it comes to love, so she doesn't really know.

yume-chan is a first year student at shirosawa gakuen, and specializes in singing and vocals, with no other musical talent whatsoever. her academic grades are not exactly the best. every weekend and sometimes after school, she heads over to the local bakery and pastry shop, where she helps out the owner/chef with making sweets to hone her dream of becoming a pastry chef.
POSITIVE & NEGATIVE, - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
• sweet , yume-chan is sweet, gentle, and kind at most times, if only because she hates having people be left out or feel lonely. she's generally likable and friendly, and has qualms about saying 'no.' at lunch if you're hungry and have no food, she'll give up hers. if it's freezing out and you have no coat, she'll lend you the one she's wearing. if it's raining and you're soaking wet from lack of umbrella, she'll share hers. you get the point. she'll do anything to make those she loves happy, without any ulterior motive other than wanting to be liked. • sensitive , most can tell upon meeting her that yume is ridiculously sensitive. she can pick up on the emotional turmoil of others almost immediately, and before long their emotional turmoil becomes her emotional turmoil. she tries incredibly hard to sympathize with others, to feel what they feel, if only to make them feel less alone. • wants to be a hero , yume's greatest desire is to change the world. yes, she's small and weak and could be easily broken, and she acknowledges all of this, but still she tries to make a difference. years of watching heroic action cartoons has given her ideals of a world of heroes and villains and good and evil, and has gifted her with a strong sense of justic and righteousness. it's because of this that she dreams of being a hero, or changing the world for the better, of making a difference in someone's life. right now, though, this is quite nearly impossible for her, so she's decided to start by making everyone smile, one person at a time. • proud , yume-chan's pride is another thing about her that many people don't realize. it's not pride in herself - no, she's too insecure to have any of that - but rather it's pride in her family, her family that's come so far, the family of many successful doctors and lawyers and businessmen, the family that started out nearly two centuries ago as just poor farmers on a hill covered in pine trees. under her lack of self-esteem and meek nature, many fail to notice that spark of pride for her heritage, hidden beneath misgivings and insecurities. • forgiving , yume-chan is very forgiving. usually she passes off negative comments with a shaky giggle as she always tries to be friendly. what's the point of holding grudges, right? • unconfrontational , the idea of yume-chan standing up for herself is just completely ridiculous. those who are closest to her would think the world is ending, and all others would just laugh at the thought. she's a door-mat, quite simply put. more often than not, she won't dare to call anyone out, not even in a private conversation. after all, accusing someone of something invariably leads to conflict and she would prefer to avoid conflict at all costs. yes, there are instances where it's unavoidable, but in the majority of her daily interactions yumeko will choose kneeling down and squashing her pride over standing tall and offering a challenge. the more fights you pick, the less friends you have, and if there is once thing yume desperately wants it is to be liked. this is one of her greatest strengths, as well as her greatest weakness. • eager to please , this is both a strength, and a weakness. yumeko tries her absolute hardest to please others and make them happy. this stems from her lack of self-esteem and desire to be liked - if she works to make others happy, they'll like her, right? more often than not, however, she ends up being used and discarded, and then the poor girl is left wondering what she did wrong. • adamant , despite her constant attempts to keep an open mind and reluctance to take a stand and fight, yumeko has a surprising stubborn streak for such a small normally timid girl. once her mind fixates on an idea it does not shake loose easily. her non-existent self-esteem serves as a perfect example - no matter the compliments or praise she receives, no matter the dormant talent she discovers and awakens, no matter the people who try day after day to reach her, the idea that yumeko will one day consider herself more than just a worthless little girl is laughable.
• insecure , yume-chan is probably the most insecure person you will ever meet. in her family, who prides itself on its accomplishments in the academic and professional world, yumeko has never really fit in. her grades are just average except for in one or two subjects, and in comparison to her brother and her parents' expectations, she's developed a sort of inferiority complex of sorts. she was always too shy, too small, too weak, not smart enough or clever enough or good enough. her parents have always expected far too much of her and it is because of this that she is incredibly sensitive to criticism, no matter how constructively it is presented. she tries to hide it, but it's there, and not exactly hidden very well either. • naive , the small first year is only a little tiny bit judgmental, and tends to believe the best of everyone without any reason to. she's always been almost childish in her naivety, far too trusting, and her naivety leads her to be stubborn in her beliefs, too narrow-minded for her own good. people may tends to bully her or disregard her because of her scrawny build, but she still manages to keep her innocence in tact. this, however, makes her easy prey, and she's often pushed around and roughened into situations she'd rather not be involved in. sometimes she'll try to act sophisticated, but the fact of the matter is that she knows very little about the real world, and there are just so many things she doesn't understand. most innuendos or other such comments go right over her head. • clumsy , yume-chan could very possibly be the clumsiest person at shirosawa. on a normal day, she tends to run into things or trip and fall. she'd trip over a blade of grass if it hit her foot the wrong way. • insensitive , while the small girl is sensitive, she also isn't. she's able to pick up on the emotions of others incredibly fast, but comforting others is not her strong suit. and, honestly, what good is feeling the same emotions as someone if you can do nothing to help them? • wears her heart on her sleeve , yume is an open book. this can be a good thing, but also a bad thing. her heart is on her sleeve, and it can be damaged, so to speak, during daily everyday activities. her emotions can be read on her face ridiculously easily, so there are often no misunderstandings involved with her, but because what she's feeling is displayed out for the world to see, many people might try to take advantage of this and use it to push her into situations she'd rather not be in. • untrusting , another contradiction. yumeko can be very trusting towards strangers and people she barely knows, but toward those closest to her, towards her best friends, she feels the need to guard herself more. the closer she is to someone, the more they know about her, and thus the more vulnerable she is. and yume's been hurt one too many times to let her guard down anymore. • shy , yume-chan, although she is very trusting to people she doesn't know, is incredibly shy at first. this could possibly be because she is worried about the impression she is giving off and genuinely wants who ever she's talking to to like her, but it's mostly because she's afraid, despite the trust she puts in others so easily. • controlled by fears , the small girl's fear tends to control her, more than fear should ever control any one person. when she's really truly scared, she can't move. the fear chokes her, even, and she has to fight it just to breathe, almost like she's having an asthma attack of sorts. she's can't move, can't scream, can't defend herself (worst case scenario).
ADORE & LOATHE, - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

• before coming to shirosawa, yumeko lived in her grandparents' house with her grandfather and brother. her dad, a high-class important business man, was always out and about on business trips, and her mother, a successful doctor, was always at the hospital tending to others. • when she was younger, yume's grandmother used to make her sweets to cheer her up whenever she was feeling down. this is the reason she is so intent on become a patissiere, to make people smile like her grandma used to make her smile. • her grandmother passed away when yumeko was seven. she was absolutely devastated and wouldn't leave her grandma's bedroom for days, and no one could get her to leave, until her brother came in there and cheered her up. before then, she envied her brother because of the love and praise their parents gave him, but after that, she admired him and looked up to him. the two have only grown so much more closer since then. • her brother is three years older than her, a fourth year at shirosawa, and is ridiculously overprotective of the small first year. • yume-chan started to do kendo in her grandfather's dojo a few months after her grandmother passed away. at first, her parents wouldn't allow it - how could they? she was their small scrawny little girl. she was clumsy and would hurt herself and there was no need for her to learn how to defend herself when her big brother would be there to protect her, right? - but eventually, they stopped paying attention, and her brother started to teach her before she started practicing full-time at the dojo. • yume's parents both attended the school and met there, and have donated large amounts of money to it since they became wealthy. her brother started at shirosawa when she was eleven, and at first she missed him terribly, but a desire for him to not know she was sad and for him to be proud of how well she was handling being alone kept her strong. yumeko herself started shirosawa three years later, and is now a first year. • yume-chan loves to sing. it's her method of expressing herself, and she loves the feeling of letting her emotions go through the sound of her voice, but she's far too shy to ever do it in public, and only those closest to her even know that she can sing. • growing up, yumeko was always small and slow to grow. that still remains true. she stands at a grand total of four feet ten and a half inches (yes, the half is important), and weighs about eighty or ninety pounds. her limbs are small and scrawny, lending to her overall image of being a small prepubescent child. most mistake her for a middle school kid, but she'd do anything to make herself seem older and more mature. • there are two things yume-chan loves to do above all - singing, and baking. yume-chan loves to sing, and excels in it, as well. while singing, her voice and clear and strong, not the normal shy stutter she normally speaks with. for her, it is easier to express herself through singing than through speaking. and aside from singing, yume-chan absolutely adores baking. she wants to be a pastry chef at some point in her life, even though her family is against it. the petite girl started baking at a young age and has grown to love it ever since, and she truly puts in every effort when making sweets. she does this mostly in memory of her grandmother, who adored her more than any other family member of hers ever did, and who used to make delicious cakes for her when she was sad and feeling incompetent. every ingredient, every time she beats a batter or separates eggs or put something into the oven, yume-chan does it with the intention of bringing smiles to the faces of those who eat her sweets. because, sweets have the power to make you smile when you're sad, right?
